We all know that teaching text response writing involves so much more than simply teaching students the key events of a novel, play or film. Students need to know how to structure an essay, write excellent topic sentences, embed quotes, analyse symbols, respond to a topic….the list is endless and there never seems to be time to teach it all in the English classroom. In this workshop, we will engage in backwards design for teaching a great text response unit that teaches skills as well as text knowledge.
