This workshop is aimed at senior primary and junior secondary literacy and English teachers. It will demonstrate a range of explicit, evidence-based teaching strategies to improve students’ comprehension and inference of both fiction and non-fiction texts. In particular, the workshop will explore:

• The difference between reading assessment activities and learning-to-read activities
• How to use effective strategies before, during and after reading
• How to establish effective reading routines and classroom systems
• How to implement reading comprehension activities that help students identify main ideas, comprehend information, infer meaning and analyse authorial techniques
• How to incorporate direct reading instruction into common units of work, including text response, persuasive writing and creative writing
• How to effectively link reading and writing skills
