This workshop is designed for Year 12 teachers who will be teaching the poetry of Mary Oliver in 2025 as a text response for Year 12 English. The workshop will begin by looking at essay tasks which can be set for Oliver’s poetry, which poems to focus on and how to organise the poems into thematic groups. The workshop will then look at how to teach themes, imagery and poetic techniques in Oliver’s poetry. The workshop will also explore how to teach students to discuss and think about the messages in the poetry and demonstrate a range of analytic writing activities teachers can engage in to improve student writing.
