The best strategies and resources for improving reading comprehension and inference skills at Years 5-10

There are two common beliefs and practices around comprehension in our classrooms: 1) That it can’t be taught – if students don’t get it, they don’t get it; 2) That assessing comprehension (i.e getting students to do some reading then answer questions), is the same thing as teaching comprehension. Both are wrong. This practical workshop will demonstrate to teachers exactly how we can teach students about comprehension and inference and how we can create tasks – one off or part of a unit – that give students meaningful opportunities to practise being good readers. This workshop will equip teachers with a range of practical strategies for improving students reading of both creative and informational texts.
