Our new VM Literacy Handbook 1 – for Vocational Major Literacy Units 1&2 – is filled with strategies to help students understand and write about community and workplace issues. While the content might be slightly different to what students do in VCE or junior English, there is significant overlap in terms of persuasive writing skills. The image below shows a short list of ‘Signposting and Sequencing Phrases’ that students can use at the beginning of paragraphs to link one argument and the next. Our VM Literacy Handbook 1 scaffolds students to use phrases like these to sequence their arguments. However, you can use the exact same resource currently in your junior or VCE English classrooms to help students structure and create cohesive persuasive pieces.
